Aims and History

Allan-Ross Nursing & Homecare Ltd has been providing a range of nursing, care at home and support services in East Lothian and Midlothian since March 1998. Since then we’ve cared for more than 1,000 clients.

The company was set up to provide high quality, holistic care services primarily for the elderly, but also for adults with disabilities. Our home care and nursing services allow our clients to continue living safely, comfortably and as independently as possible in their own homes, while maintaining their dignity and independence.

Allan-Ross’s founders, Maureen Allan and Barbara Bostock, say:

“As registered nurses with more than 50 years of nursing and home care experience between us, we wanted to provide kinder, more gentle care at home. We base our services on our ethos of providing the same high quality of care we would want to give our own families.”

Allan-Ross also supplies key nursing personnel to nursing homes and has supplied over 1,000 trained staff to nursing homes since 1998.

Allan-Ross is dedicated to providing the highest standards of care and strives to achieve this by combining efficient administration and management with first-class training practices we embrace the fundamental principles of the National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice, and comply with the requirements of the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care, Scottish Social Services Council, the United Kingdom Home Care Association (UKHCA) and Scottish Care At Home (SCAH) (see logos with links on right).

Values

We believe Home Care Services should reflect and promote values that focus upon the specific needs of each individual client. A detailed, personalised Care Plan is prepared for each client. This Plan lists all the tasks that you would like your carer to carry out and the days and times they will be done.

Allan-Ross draws on the Core Values of the National Care Standards and the Scottish Social Services Council’s Codes of Practice. These values incorporate your right to: dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, and equality and diversity.

Carers

Our Registered Nurses and Carers are an excellent team of skilled, professional individuals.

We select our carers using rigorous recruitment procedures. Criminal records and registrations with professional bodies (the Nursing & Midwifery Council or the Scottish Social Services Council Register, as applicable) are checked and checked again at required intervals. References are also taken up.

Before our carers are allocated work they all undergo Allan-Ross’s rigorous 12 week Induction Training based on the Induction Standards for Health and Social Care in Scotland. Furthermore, they are required to provide evidence that they are continuing to develop their skills (Continuous Professional Development) throughout their employment with us.

Our clients have helped us improve our recruitment and training programmes over the years.

Training includes, but is not limited to: Personal Care, Health & Safety at Work, Applying the National Care Standards, Moving & Handling People, First Aid Awareness, Food Hygiene, Medication Administration and SVQ Level ll in Health & Social Care.

Our female carers wear lilac tunics trimmed with blue, and our male carers wear white tunics, both with blue or black trousers. Registered Nurses wear royal-blue tunics edged with white. All our staff carry photographic ID cards with them.

We realise that your carer is someone with whom you may develop a special trust and friendship. Our carers work in area teams, and we introduce you to all the members of the area team. This means that if your regular carer has to take time off, your replacement carer will be familiar to you.

From time to time we may visit you in your home to assess the performance of your carer, to make sure they are doing their job correctly, safely and to your satisfaction.
