Allan-Ross achieves top marks for quality of care

‘Barbara Bostock (back row, third from left) and Maureen Allan (back row, fifth from left) are Allan-Ross’s founders. Allan-Ross were finalists at the recent Scottish Training Federation awards in the ‘Provider of Quality Training’ and the ‘Training Provider of the Year’ categories (the only company nominated twice).‘
East Lothian-based Allan-Ross Nursing & Homecare has just achieved the top ratings of ‘excellent’, Grade ‘6’, across all the Care Commission’s quality criteria for its ‘care at home’ services. The Care Commission’s comprehensive review of care standards includes direct feedback from clients and their carers. The areas measured cover the quality of ‘care and support’, ‘staffing’ and ‘management and leadership’.
Since 1998 Allan-Ross has made it possible for more than 1,000 elderly and disabled people to continue living in their own homes as independently and comfortably as possible.
At the heart of Allan-Ross’s success lies a genuine belief in providing holistic, personalised care, combined with rigorous carer recruitment policies and excellent training. All the ‘care at home’ specialist’s nurses and carers undergo a 12 week training induction programme and can access a wide range of courses delivered by the Company from ‘Understanding Dementia’ to ‘Safe Moving & Handling’. As one of the only SQA approved training centres for Health & Social Care SVQs, Allan-Ross also provides training for nursing home staff as well as their own staff.
Barbara Bostock, a registered nurse and one of the founders of Allan-Ross, says:
“We believe strongly that everyone should be able to live in their own home, where they want to stay, for as long as possible. By encouraging independence, people are more relaxed and have better health. We believe that most people would rather have their family supported at home and not in a care home.
“Maureen Allan and I always aim to provide professional but very caring, friendly care. This is based on our ethos that all clients should receive the same high standard of care that we would give our own families.”
Central to Allan-Ross’s service is the client’s Care Plan; updated daily, their Allan-Ross Care Plan details the client’s needs and the care services being provided. This is developed in consultation with clients, their families and care staff to have a particularly person-centred format which focuses on the client’s individual care needs in relation to medications, meals, bathing and socialising. However, its personal style goes further and includes sections on ‘how I would like you to help me’ and ‘things I like to talk about’.
Linda Porteous, one of Allan-Ross’s dedicated carers from Prestonpans, explains how their care service works:
“Each of our clients is looked after by a team of 2 - 4 carers to ensure they are properly cared for by the same carers 7 days a week. We get to know our clients well over time, and understand their daily routine, likes and dislikes. Continuity of care is essential and it helps our clients build up their confidence and trust.
“The office manages our rotas and provides the support we need. Allan-Ross is a good employer and it’s a very rewarding job.”
Funding for ‘personal care’ in Scotland is often free for those over 65 (subject to an Assessment), but, where necessary, Allan-Ross can advise clients on how best to pay for ‘care at home’ services (call 01875 616666). Clients can choose their own care providers and arrange payment through the Direct Payment scheme.
